HANDRAILS

If you decide you’d like to upgrade your handrials with a new StairFurb handrail system, there are two choices:

Untreated American Oak

Brushed Stainless Steel

All handrail options are 42.4mm diameter and come in maximum lengths of 4m. The handrails are supplied pre cut to the required length and fitted with our brushed stainless steel handrail brackets (seen below).

Stairfurb untreated oak is a natural product and will require treatment prior to installation, including sanding and coating with a suitable wood finish product.

All long Oak handrails will be bent to lesser or greater extends, you’ll very rarely get a fully flat, straight one when free-standing. We can only guarantee fit for purpose, not straight. If they can push down to the floor with minimum force then that will be deemed as fit for purpose as brackets will pull them straight. It’s only where there is a severe kink that they may be rejected as not being fit for purpose.

oak information guide for advice on storage and treatment

GLASS

Our StairFurb glass is all bespoke cut and specifically designed for internal use. All our glass is:

8mm thick

Polished edges

Radius corners

Toughened

The longest any one panel can be is 1100mm, due to building regulations. We allow 25mm horizontal space between newel post or wall and the glass and between each panel of glass. We also allow approximately 16mm vertical space above and below the glass, which is to allow space for clamps.

Radius corners are done to BSEN 12150 required standards. Each panel is subtly laser etched on one edge with Kite Mark to BSEN12150, to prove that it is made to building regulation requirements.

NEWEL POSTS

If your existing newel posts are too thin, or are shaped (a bit like a chess piece), you may decide you want to replace the newel posts. We sell newel posts in either solid Oak, or solid Pine. The standard widths of the posts are 90x90mm but we may be able to provide other custom widths if required. If you do require a custom width post, please contact our sales team for a custom quotation for these. The length of the posts vary, based on the style so please check the length on the product pages.

There are three types of newel post available, and each of these can be ordered in Oak or Pine:

Straight Newel Posts. If are building a new staircase from scratch or intend to remove the full newel post (including full stump), you may wish to order a straight newel post to replace it. These posts do not come with any kind of fixing components.

Spigot Newel Posts. In most cases people will have existing posts that have a square stump. The Spigot Newel posts are designed to be fitted on top of the existing stump. These posts come with a 50mm diameter dowel which can be fitted and glued into a hole drilled in stump.

Half Posts. Half posts are usually used against a wall at the end of a landing section. These posts a 90mm wide and 45mm deep and usually 1000mm tall.

Please note that if you will be ordering newel posts and they are of a different width/depth to your existing posts, you will need to consider the impact they will have on the handrail lengths. The handrail lengths you provide should be the length with the new posts fitted.

Fitting newel posts does require some carpentry skill and we would strongly advise hiring a professional to fit new posts.
