Most Asked FAQ's
Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Our delivery service only delivers to mainland UK. The vans do not go on any ferries. This means we can’t deliver to Ireland, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight etc. If you live off the mainland, you are welcome to arrange collection, using a specialist courier.
Yes! All fittings are included with any of our balustrade kits. This includes any glass clamps and brackets for our ‘Clamped’ range as well as any required screws and dowels for our ‘Embedded’ range. In short, if you order a bespoke ‘kit’ we provide everything you’ll need. We even provide a tube of touch-up paint for our painted kits, just in case.
Tolerances vary between the different measurements and also dependent upon the type of balustrade kit you choose. The Stainless and Oak round clamped kits have the most tolerance, so if you are DIY measuring and worried about accuracy, this may be the best kit for you.
We’d always recommend booking a live video call. They are free!
While our kits are made for DIY installation, we understand that not everybody has the time or inclination to install their own balustrades. It’s for this reason that we have a Recommended Fitter search function, enabling customers to view the local installation services available to them, from recommended tradesmen.
Our delivery lead times are approximately 21 working days from receipt of order or ‘sign off’ and payment. This may be up to six weeks for areas of Scotland, so please contact us before ordering if you require delivery to Scotland.
Delivery lead times may be extended by up to 14 days for customers paying with consumer finance, due to the 14 day cooling off period.
Sorry, we only deliver to mainland UK.
Yes we do. These are available in our parts shop and are not included as standard in our balustrade kits.
Our standard newel posts come as 90mm x 90mm wide, but we also supply custom size newel posts from 70mm to 100mm wide.
All our posts are supplied in oak, or pine which can be painted to match your handrail colour.
Our glass is 8mm toughened safety glass for all internal kits. It abides by the UK building regulations. All our clamped glass has radius corners.
External balustrade kits use either 10mm toughened safety glass or 17.5mm or 19.5mm toughened laminated glass, depending on the kit chosen.
All our systems are made to measure, but we do have some set parameters and the longest a panel can be is 1100mm, which is due to building regulations.
Each section is made to measure and the longest we will make any panel of glass is 1100mm. If you divide the total handrail length by 1100mm you will have an idea as to how many panels will be provided for that section. Please note that we do also allow a horizontal space between the newel post and glass, and between each panel of glass. The horizontal gap is 25mm for Round Clamped Glass Kits, but 15mm for Embedded Glass Kits and Square Clamped Glass Kits.
For Round Clamped Glass Balustrade Kits we allow for 25mm horizontal gap, between the newel post and the glass and between each panel of glass. For Embedded Glass Balustrade Kits, and for Square Clamped Glass Kits, the gap is 15mm.
YES. You can collect from our factory in Barton Under Needwood. The postcode is DE13 8AJ.
Please not however:
– NO packaging is provided
– Glass is completely naked
– Onward transportation is at customers risk
– You must book collection date/time with our dispatch team.
Yes you can if you want to have a clamped glass system. You can’t keep your existing handrails and have embedded glass though. Usually once you remove the existing spindles and chocks of timber that are between each spindle, you will be left with a channel which will need filling. From our experience, it can be difficult to remove the spindles and pieces of timber without damaging the baserail or handrail. It’s for this reason, and the fact that existing handrails often aren’t perfectly parallel to the baserail, that we generally advise that it’s best to replace both handrails and baserails.
All our products are produced to building regulations requirements. The glass is all toughened, with radius corners and the edges are all polished to avoid any sharp edges. We also use minimal gaps (25mm or 15mm) to prevent children putting limbs through gaps. Glass is not only very strong, but also extremely simple to wipe clean!

Regular glass cleaner can be used to clean glass panels. We would advise not using any substances that are highly corrosive, as these could corrode the rubber inside clamps if they have clamps, or the silicone that they may put into the baserail of embedded kits. StairFurb does sell glass cleaning kits, which are purchased from the parts shop, here: https://stairfurb.co.uk/product/stairfurb-cleaning-kit/
You can buy stainless steel cleaner from most supermarkets. Stainless steel is a very easy material to clean.
To clean oak we would suggest using water and vinegar. Water and vinegar can be used to clean almost anything. It is a natural, non-toxic way to clean things without worrying about abrasive chemicals and fumes. After all of the dust and debris are removed from the railings and banister, spray a mixture of water and vinegar (1:1 ratio) on a cloth and wipe down the wood. It removes dirt, grime, odors, and kills bacteria, viruses, and mold.
If you have ordered untreated oak, you should treat it immediately. While the oak is untreated, it is suseptable to warping and splitting, as it absorbs and released moisture due to changes in humidity and temperature.
Glass is very easy to wipe clean, so children’s hand prints or marks from pets are quickly and easily wiped off with standard glass cleaning products.
Glass is far easier to maintain than painted or wooden spindles!
In short, no. StairFurb balustrade kits are only compatible for stair sections if they have a closed stringer, as our baserails need a stringer to sit on. We do not produce glass that steps around the stair treads.
Our products come with a five year guarantee.
