Measuring your stairs can be achieved in 4 steps. It requires a tape measure and a digital protractor. If you need a protractor, StairFurb send you one after you’ve placed your order. You then update your order using the link provided in your order acknowledgement email.
Alternatively, we offer live video consultations that are a quick and helpful way to get guidance on taking staircase measurements.
STAIRCASE MEASURING GUIDE
Before You Get Started
We have tried to simplify the measurement process required to replace your entire stair balustrading. You’ll need to provide four measurements: ‘height one’, ‘height two’, handrail length and baserail angle.
This guide goes through the steps to follow to complete the measurements for your balustrade renovation project. If you have any queries, or need any help, please contact one of the team and we’ll help
Measuring 'Height One'
Height one is only needed if you are retaining your existing handrails and only ordering glass and clamps.
Please note, if your project requires a new baserail, follow the step below.
This ensures that the new baserail will fit.
Measure the same points at three different places on the staircase. Checking for variance is important as over time, the staircase may have changed slightly. Take note of the smallest measurement.
Measuring 'Height Two'
If there is a cap on your newel post, measure to the underside of the cap.
The measurement must start from the underside of the existing baserail rather than the top of the baserail.
If you are wanting to fit a new handrail, you must ensure there is enough space for the new handrail bracket to fit to the top of the newel post. This needs to be 70mm width and 150mm height of flat surface.
Unless you have a specific newel post length in mind, we suggest a measurement of at least 1000mm to ensure that the finished glass and handrail height meet building regulations.
If you would prefer to check the various lengths of newel post available, check here.
Measuring Handrail Length
This measurement is to determine the length of your handrail.
Measure from inside the bottom newel post to the inside of the top newel post.
The measurement must start from the underside of the existing baserail rather than the top of the baserail.
If you have a spirit level, make sure your newel posts are sat vertically. If your newel posts are not plumb vertical we recommend replacing your newel posts and book a free video call with one of our experts to discuss If either newel post does lean, use the baserail measurement instead.
Measuring Baserail Angle
Measuring the internal angle between your newel post and stair string
If you don’t have a protractor, you can still place an order. StairFurb will send you a digital protractor to measure this.
Get a spirit level and place the spirit level plumb vertical (perfectly vertical), measure the angle between this and the baserail.
